And about time too!
OK, so it took a week. A WEEK but I think it's finally working and looking OK. Or not bad. Bearable. Anyway, this LJ is officially closed. My new weblogjournallything can be found at Frog in a Sock. You think that's a bad name? I was going to call it "My Weblogjournallything". See, bet you wish you hadn't dissed the frog name now, aren't you? Edit: 18th December, 2004. I just noticed I got the name of my own damn journal wrong. Haha. | | Thursday, March 13th, 2003 | | 9:44 pm |
Your cheeks washed with the night.
I'm building a journally thing on my website. I feel both smart and stupid. Smart because I finally Chmoded the files correctly and can therefore log in and play. Stupid because the comments form won't work. Oh well, it's a process that will take time if nothing else. At least I've got some nice graphics sorted :) So I think the time is coming to end this LJ. The thing on my site (I don't know what to call it. It's not really a blog and it's not really a journal. I've called it "Blather" which sums it up nicely!) will have a different focus (assuming I ever get it to work, LOL.) Perhaps the world is over my insane, work related rants. That'd be a shame. OK, so not really. And let's face it, I could really do with a more positive outlook on life. Also, I'm taking the "Words" section off my site as the only thing in it is rants and I'll never get around to anything else. Anyway, the "new" one is not yet ready to go. I'll post a link to it here when it is. | | Friday, March 7th, 2003 | | 11:10 pm |
What's that you say Mrs Robinson?
Here endeth the week from hell. Poor staffing issues are getting ever so slightly tedious indeed. There hasn't been a single day this week where we've been at full staff levels. No wonder we're all buggered. On the bright side, this is a long weekend. Hurrah for long weekends! Three weeks from now I'll be in Sydney. I only remembered last night to book my flight up there! Now that would have been a "d'oh" moment. How funky it is to say "Oh, I'm taking a month off" Elsie is packed and ready to go, you'll be pleased to know. Or not pleased to know. How you feel about this issue is entirely up to you. Not a lot else to say that isn't blathering on about my job. How pathetic. Current Mood: exhaustedCurrent Music: Simon and Garfunkel. No, really. | | Tuesday, March 4th, 2003 | | 9:53 pm |
Inspired by the Motion Picture
There's a phrase on way too many soundtracks. How do they mean "inspired by"? Anyway, I'm listening to the Goldmember soundtrack at the minute which has the funky bonus of the "Daddy Wasn't There" clip. I'm buying the DVD on Thursday. Yeah, it wasn't the best Austin Powers outing, but it had enough funny bits to keep it going and also I have a shameful and secret crush on Mr Powers. It will remain secret as no one ever reads my LJ. Ah ha! I keep forgetting to watch Buffy. I saw a bit of it last week but Willow's suffering was way too hard after a shocker of a day at work (not as bad as today - two, count em TWO full time staff members and a mender trying to keep the place together until everyone else arrived. I was on info desk, which is a huge no no as I'm an officer and not allowed to do that.). I get the feeling that this series is going to be something akin to series 5 on the "difficulty of watching" scale. Which I will find out when, in the not too distant future, I buy the box sets and go on a Buffy binge :) I don't think I can catch up now. | | Sunday, March 2nd, 2003 | | 9:03 pm |
I got flowers in the spring. Or something.
Today was pretty much crapola. Work was busy and I was on with a girl who has just gained a degree, but would rather be working a pissy 20 hour fortnight at a library than go and get a proper and degree-related job. She's also very annoying, but does not have a degree in that. I think not, anyway. She's quite good at it, so perhaps she has had some kind of training. When I got home, Mum and Dad were still down at the festival/clean-up Australia thing, so I popped down with the camera as Dad had said he wanted photos of the collected rubbish (but he'd forgotten to take the camera). That 5 minute trip ended up being a couple of hours, but that's OK. The fucking hippies who are so in tune with the earth and all that had mixed their recyclables with rubbish and left a trail of rubbish all over the place. I'm over hippies. It's all very well saying "Everything is bad and needs to be good" but if your method of making things good is dropping out and becoming lazy then I'm sorry, i can't be dealing with you. I have a feeling that this - http://www.fox.com/mba/ - is one of the most disturbing ideas ever. | | Friday, February 28th, 2003 | | 9:35 pm |
I wander around the streets of this town
Just got an e-mail with the subject "Your wedding website is NOT BEING SEEN! :O". This is mainly, I think, to my not having a wedding website. Also no penis, but still have over 30 offers to increase my penis size. I love the internet :) A chap today wanted me to help him find a company phone number on their website. I found it and he said "No, that's not a phone number, it looks strange". I explained that the phone number was British and a different format to Aussie ones, also the "+44" was a country code. The following is a true conversation: Him: "But why would they have a British phone number?" Me: "Because they're a British company. See (I point to the screen) based in Bristol". Him: "How come I can see their site? This is Australia." Me: "Um" Him: "I mean, we're in Australia. We shouldn't be able to see sites in England" Me: "Ah" A very quick explaination of the phrase World Wide Web followed, and then I had to run away. We are having cool weather now. By this I mean lower temperatures, not clouds wearing sunglasses and saying "Wassup!" all the time. It is a nice break from the searing heat and also a nice break from the dry with little bits of rain happening. Just uploaded a stack of images for eBay auctions, and find eBay is down until 10pm. Today was the day from hell. A staffer called in sick, so that was less than fun and then we were too busy to blink for most of the day. I got a whole two shifts of desk (whoo and also hoo!) but had to do the after school shift again. I have to work Sunday too :( Everytime I bitch about working weekends everyone says "You won't bitch when you see your pay packet" but I do anyway 'coz I don't need the money and would rather not work weekends full stop. Also, Saturday shifts for me and the other officer are a full day when everyone else does a half day. Apparently to do a 35 hour week like we do, we need some evening and/or weekend shifts. We can switch to a 38 hour week and do no weekends or evenings (but I'd cop a lot of shit in the branch if I did that). What's really annoying is that there are at least two branches that I know of that have staff on 35 hour weeks with no weekends and no evenings. I hate this "one rule for you, one rule for them" bull shit. To get the full impression of today, at 10am tomorrow morning go "AAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH" and keep it up until 5pm. You may like to hire some small kiddies to throw the odd tantrum in the background for that authentic library feel. Ask some friends to ask some really stupid questions ("What time to you close?" "In one minute" "Uh huh. What time do you close?"). Bingo, you have Friday the 28th. Ain't it purdy?! Believe it or not, i haven't played "The Sims Online" for this whole week. This is mainly due to my brother planning another internet connection. With an access roster looming I figured it best to wean myself off TSO although i miss it :( At least I can get my e-mail etc at work without feeling like I'm ruining lives by using the phone line. Anyhoo. "League of Gentlemen" is on in a moment. My right wrist has gone all doolally, possibly from the trigger on the scanner at work. Current Mood: tiredCurrent Music: David Cassidy. Oh shut up. | | Friday, February 21st, 2003 | | 11:28 pm |
Wet stuff, falls from sky, 4 letters. RAIN! Actual, genuine, damp RAIN. It's all too too much. I woke at 5am and heard steady drops on the roof. The lady on the TV with the pink shirt and hyperactivity problem (never good first thing in the morning) mentioned something about "showers clearing" but bestest of all, they just didn't clear. It was misty rain all day with the odd heavy fall. On the way home the pine plantation was all foggy, as was the road outside my house. It's all too too exciting! OK, anyone now thinking "Rain? What is so fun about rain? Bah! It prevents the enjoyment of outdoor sports and makes the ground underfoot squishy unless it's cement or a similar solid substance". Yes, well, I live in Australia and what with El Nino and 7 years of lower than average rainfall we are having a drought. Everything has been unbearably dry (although, to be fair, I don't rely on rain for my income like farmers). This also explains the sudden and terrifying out-of-controlness of recent bushfires. So, mock me if you like, but today was the best day in ages. Excluding work, but I won't go there because everything in this house is slightly damp with humidity and it's ALL GOOD. The crickets are over joyed, and I expect the frogs (the few frogs remaining) to join in at some stage. For now I think they're just a bit shocked. I know it won't last, but that's OK. A teeny respite from this endess dry is fine for now. Weather people are picking March for the real end of the drought. There are actual puddles. It's astounding. Here's an amusing footnote: what with water falling from the sky for the first time in yonks, our mains water has been cut off. You gotta laff. Um, just wandering about the net now, waiting for TSO to be back online and looking at some bookmarked sites and wondering how come I bookmarked them. You know, 'net stuff. Been a while, but you know how it is.
Haven't had a lot to say, really. Work is still giving the shits and the other day a girl came in who i thought was familier. Turns out she was part of the last intake before I left Coles. She was annoying then, she's annoying now and joy of joys, doing a course at the TAFE over the road. "So I'll be in here a lot!" she says. Big fucking deal. God, is that really all I have to say for myself after however long it is? I've been playing The Sims a lot, so nothing much else is happening. Which is the same as normal, but with more Sims Goodness. Watched the first of Buffy 7 today. I'm kinda pissed that they're moving back to the high school, but can see why. And Giles was in it, too :) Spike is beyond gorgeous, but it was too sad when he said he'd tried to cut his heart out. Oh for fuck's sake, I am fat too interested in all this. Move on. | | Thursday, February 13th, 2003 | | 8:09 pm |
Her majesty's a pretty nice girl.
Here's a fun site, home of the Wayback Machine where you enter a URL and see what the site looked like as early as 1996 (the earliest eBay is so cute!): http://www.archive.orgSpent today organizing tomorrow's Valentine Day Promotion. It's a blind date with a book dealie. You borrow a book and it has a "partner" book attached to it. The partner book is wrapped up so you can't see what it is, hence the blind date thing. Promotions person bought all this red fabric to hand behind the display which looked brilliant, but then she stuck all these dodgy signs all over it, so now it looks oh so tacky. Valentines day is tack, though really. All the adverts are saying "prove your love, buy her a diamond/dozen roses/gold clunky necklace thing". I wonder why men are targeted to buy things and women aren't. If the ladies are expecting something swish, they should also buy something swish, otherwise it's a gimme gimme gimme situation, which is yuk. Anyway, I hate valentines day. | | Monday, February 10th, 2003 | | 9:53 pm |
Oh, Turnips. Turnips turnips turnips.
Well. Indeed. Got home tonight and went into my bedroom to find what can only be described as utter chaos. Seems Stitch found himself locked in (although how is a mystery as the door is kept firmly shut) and after ripping chunks of wood out of the door in an effort to get out, trashed some stuff. The Miss Piggy Poppett sent for Christmas is very worse for wear as most of her hair has been torn out :( Thankfully, he left most of the animals alone (and yes, Elsie is OK, as is Blue Penguin), but punctured Kermit's eye, tore the eyes off my seal and trashed a lot of less interesting stuff. I can't find the eyes from the seal, i think he's eaten them. I'm a little bit gutted as he went for the special ones mainly :( Then he burst his way out the window and ran off. Mum found him when she got home, but hadn't been into the room, so didn't know. Oh! And he tore the wings of ther Angel Bear I bought for Sophie, so I'll have to get another one (I could wash that one and pretend it never had wings, but it's a bit worse for wear and I'd feel horrid). The Primary School fundraiser continues to get support. They've got Monique Brumby and the Dili Allstars signed up to perform, along with others. It's on the 23rd and on the 22nd the library is apparently having a stall at the Good Neighbours festival. I am gagging to not do this! I hate this kind of promotion, it never really works. I mean, you've got a festival, performers, stalls, music, food. Then there's the library stall, a card table with some pamphlets on it. Whoo-fucking-hoo. To attract more teenagers to the library, one of the librarians at another branch has started a homework club. Yeah, come to the library and do your homework, big laughs. | | Monday, February 3rd, 2003 | | 9:59 pm |
Ooops, forgot
Forgot to mention that The history book is FINISHED!
Finally. This means no more scanning, marathon layout sessions, disappearing captions etc etc. Hurrah! | | 9:21 pm |
What could you do, what could you say to make me wanna go away?
Hmmmm. Hmmmmmmm. So this is what the internet looks like now. Tonight is a "Night Off" from the Sims. I am nearly coping :) Here's what I've missed on-line: over 300 spam messages. Whoo hoo. So glad I'm no longer missing them. The smoke haze is just getting worse and worse. Trying to get information about the fires near Bright etc is tricky as none of the news services tonight mentioned them, even though they are still out of control. it was pretty much 15 minutes of space shuttle followed by 15 minutes of cricket. Mum and I went over to Kew yesterday to have a look at the graveyard. Not as grim as you think. It's a great graveyard, full of little twisty paths and whatnot. The best memorial was for a young wealthy lady who died (we think of TB) in the late 1800s. She had inherited what can only be describe as huge wodges of cash and when she married a doctor his low finances made everyone think he was only after the money. To prove that he wasn't, when she died he spent every last penny on her memorial. I'll get around to posting some photos of it at some stage. It's really beautiful with stained glass etc. Work tomorrow. Again. ACK. ACK ACK ACK. Also, ACK. A letter in your writing doesn't mean you're not dead
Today at work we unpacked the branch run, wrote up holds, did the shelf check lists, typed up notes for the minutes. Tomorrow will be the same exact thing, but with borrowers and shelf tidying. Saturday will be the exact same thing... and so on. Which is, I think, the basic cause of any and all dissatisfaction I have with my job. Nothing is ever done. You do something, then the next day week or month it just needs to be done again. Yes, I know. "That's work, darling" but there must be some kind of job out there where things get done and stay done. Not everything, perhaps, but something once in a while. I'm working Saturday this weekend, but I don't get my 4 day weekend reward as I've an IT support meeting and a branch meeting. It's odd, because usually I get really cranky about the Saturday shifts (all day on desk, with two of the most ill tempered staffers in the region), but this week it's more of a "OK, another day". Other than that (work work work, it really is all I do!) not much has been happening. I'm trying not to Sim too much because it really is going just a little too well. Dropped off heaps of books for the Primary School today. Not nearly as many as I would have liked. The Children's Librarianwent through the last activity pile (we run a last activity on each collection about once a year - anything that hasn't been borrowed for more than 18 months or 2 years gets taken off the shelf. A Librarian goes through them and picks out any to keep, the rest are withdrawn). There were about 240 junior non fic that hadn't been borrowed for 18 months and after she'd gone through there were only about 80 left :( (Annoyingly, she didn't put them on a card and take them off again, so they'll all show up again next time we do it. Or I do it, because everyone hates doing it. Including me, LOL) If I could smile a crooked smile - more Bowie. Now my e-mail won't let me send out. Oh hurrah. Last night I had a dream where I went to get my eyes tested. The eye person (oh shut up, I can't spell the O word) said "You don't need glasses, you just need to get out more". I think my subconcious is trying to tell me something. Current Mood: mellowCurrent Music: "I would be your slave" - Bowie. | | Tuesday, January 28th, 2003 | | 9:37 pm |

My god, how dull am I these days? Anyway. This pic is of HorizonPurple, my Alphaville dwelling sim. I started with a redhead, but everyone had picked the same face so I changed (and lost all my skill points and the friends on my friend's web!). My Sim Life is going well. I have two really good friends and a couple of less good but still fun friends. I have bought a block of land and am now earing $$ desperatly in an attempt to get it worth visiting! It's all fun. I've read a lot of negative comments about the game on the message boards, but really I am enjoying it. Yes, there's glitches and the length of time it takes to earn a skill point is sometimes unbearable, but overall, it's much fun :) And yes, it's a lot more fun than my RL. In order to not get trapped, I'm making myself have at least three nights off a week. Work is shit, today more shit than a lot of days, but I'm pretty much accpeting that I'll be there for a while yet. At least most of the people are good to work with. The new job share BM is VERY hard to work with. She is partially deaf, which isn't a problem in itself. The problem comes when she won't admit she hasn't heard you. I don't mind repeating myself, I do mind telling her something and having her go "Oh, yes yes yes" when in reality she's not got a clue what you've said. Also, for someone who's work at one of our branches for 6 months already (different branch) she knows nothing about the system etc. I don't think the other branch gave her much of a chance. We are trying, but it's getting difficult. Current Mood: tiredCurrent Music: Heathen - Bowie. | | Monday, January 20th, 2003 | | 9:59 pm |
With TSO you can shed your RL.
Remember when I said "How many people are going to find that they are more popular and living better in the Sims Online?"?. Well, that's me. I'm loving it. It's like a better life. It's a pain in the bum that Real Life (RL) keeps getting in the way, though. One annoying thing is that since your property can only be online when the owner or a roomie is in it, most places are looking for roomies. This leads to people checking your profile the minute you walk into a property and you end up with 17 messages asking if you need a place to live. In Non Sims news (yes, there is such a thing!), smoke haze was very bad today with the fires up at Hotham and other places. I'm certain the whole damned country is going to burn this summer. Canberra fires unbelivable. | | Sunday, January 12th, 2003 | | 8:45 pm |
The best laid plans.
Plans for this weekend: Play "The Sims Online" a lot, train the dog a bit more, watch some DVDs from the comfort of the lounge rather than the less comfort of the computer chair. Of these three items, I managed exactly none of them. Saturday nights plan was to log on to the sims at 8:30 and hang about until "Men Behaving Badly" comes on at 11ish, then go back and hang about until maintainence (which kicks everyone out) which is usually 1am-ish. At 8:30 I was making my way to the PC and Mum said she'd like to do some more work on the book, so after The Bill we did that. By the time we finished it was 1am and too close to maintainence to bother logging on. Today my DVD plans didn't work out because there was motor racing on, so Dad wanted to watch that. I don't mind so much as I can always watch them on the PC. I bought two new ones yesterday - "Dead Poets Society" and "Hard Days Night", both special editions (if you want me to buy something, tell me it's special). I was going to buy the Red Dwarf series 1 DVD too, but I'm not paying $50 for that remastered bullshit, extra features or not. The dog training, needed as it is, didn't come about because I was reading and thought "I'll just pop out and do some training" when I fell asleep. It's the heat, I think. Either that or I'm getting old. By the time I woke up, Stitch had done his running off act which involves swimming in next doors dam, chasing the birds in another neighbours paddock and today dashing across the road in search of a rabbit. So I spent about half an hour calling him and following him up and down the paddock. The irritating part is you call him, he looks at you, wags his tail then pisses off again. Little bastard. I've not checked my ISP e-mail for several days. Just then I did and there were 162 messages (2 were NOT spam!), including 12 versions of that "I am a bank manager in Nigeria" e-mail which apparently has netted someone billions of dollars as dim people hand over their bank account details. All I need is a good scam and I'm set for life... There was a bloke in the paper today who sold literally everything he owned on eBay. I'm talking half bags of sugar, his sideburns, coffee etc. $6000 he got. I need to be at work an hour early tomorrow to do the system upgrades. I just hope the manager remembers to let me leave an hour early too! | | Thursday, January 9th, 2003 | | 10:47 pm |
I'm a Sim, I'm a Sim!
Went out to the big shops today. Had to get my licence renewed (I'm off my P Plates as of Saturday) and am pleased to say my photo looks about a zillion times better this time around. I almost pass for human in this one. Then on to the shops. Mum's glasses were priority one, but no one could fit her in for an eye test today. We're going back on Saturday. Then I accidently bought a DVD player. It's you VERY basic model, no fancy stuff and no multi-region (but I can watch those on my PC anyway). $170 in a 15% off sale, so that's not too bad. Now, on to The Sims Online. I gotta say, it ROCKS. You can create up to three sims and live in up to 3 different cities, but I've only done one at the moment until I get the hang of it. I've already got two friends on my friends web and wish I didn't have a dial up connection on a single phone line so I could play it more. I'm only doing my LJ now because my city (Alphaville) closed for maintainence. Peppy, I have it on good authority that the game will be out in the UK in Feb. Get me simmed already!
Well, the Sims Online arrived today and I've spent the last hour installing it and now it needs to download a 2Mb file to update the software. Tsk! I wanna be a Sim, it'll be nice to have a social life, LMFAO | | Sunday, January 5th, 2003 | | 12:35 am |

Book book book book
After spending about two days a few weeks ago putting pictures in Mum's history book, she suddenly rethought the whole "No chapters" thing, so we put it into chapters, all the pictures ended up 13 pages away from where they started and about half the captions are literally no where to be seen. LOL. So we binned all the images and started again. It's nearly finished now. Hurrah for that. My child sponsorship stuff arrived on Friday. I'm sponsoring a 7 year old girl in Malawi. It's kind of bizarre to think that $35 a month will do everything they say it will. Nothing much happened today, really, as I was sat in front of this PC for most of it. I'm doing the evening shift on Monday instead of Wednesday which should stuff my body clock up nicely for the rest of the week. This, I think, will be an every week thing from now on. Bugger. C'est la vie. |
